Learn to make an Every Occasion Top - Beginner dressmaking class

Workshop hosted by Emie Dine

When: Sunday 14th May 10am-13:00pm
Sunday 21st May 10am - 13:00pm
Where: The Craft Barn Hadfield
Cost: £60 (this price includes the paper dressmaking pattern)

During this 2 day course you will learn how to make a top, from start to finish, using a paper dressmaking pattern. You will leave with the knowledge of how to work from a pattern to create your own garment. This is a top that can be worn for any occasion – it’s lose fitting so you can concentrate on learning the dressmaking skills required for a great staple garment. It can be made in an everyday fabric or something more spectacular for a special occasion!

The price includes the sewing pattern for you to take away and make again and again….the pattern sizes are 10-22, if you are outside this range please contact me and I will source another pattern that can be used instead.

This is a beginner’s dressmaking class so no experience of dressmaking is required but it would be beneficial to have experience of using a sewing machine before. I can provide a short course (2 hours) prior to this course to run through the basics of threading and using a sewing machine, if there is a demand for this.

Skills you will learn

• How to read and alter a pattern
• How to lay out fabric
• How to layout a pattern and accurately cut your fabric
• How to transfer markings
• Sewing a seam
• Understanding construction
• How to press
• How to top stitch
• How to finish raw edges
• How to finish a neckline using bias binding
• How to hem a garment
• How to sew a hook and eye to close at the back.

Requirements -

You will need to bring the following items to the class –
• If you have your own sewing machine, it would be preferable to bring it along to the class (with the instruction manual, if you can find it!) I do have a number of sewing machines that can be used.
• If you have a basic sewing kit, it would be great to bring that along too (see list, don’t worry if you don’t have everything, I’m happy to share my equipment)
• 1.5 metres of woven fabric such as cotton or linen, pre-washed at 30֯ and ironed (if you need some advice, please do contact me, I can also bring along some fabrics for you to purchase, if required)
• Matching thread
• A matching button or hook and eye closure (I can also provide hook and eye closures)
• 1 metre of bias binding in a matching or complimentary colour, I will also provide some bias binding, in case you do not have your own! The binding will be on the inside of the garment.
